The Queensland Museum has reopened after a $14.3 million refurbishment.

Celebrating its 150th birthday, the leading cultural attraction suffered significant damage in the wake of natural disasters last year.

According to state arts minister Rachel Nolan many popular attractions are available again for viewing, along with some new additions.

"The new foyer features a multi-media welcome to country experience, a dugout canoe from South East Queensland, a raft from Mornington Island and the Avro Avian plane suspended from the ceiling," she said (January 20).

"The redesigned Discovery Centre will delight curious minds with live specimens, an activity zone, 22 new displays of objects from the cultures and histories collection and at its centre, a model of a Great White shark swims overhead."

Queensland Museum Director Dr Graeme Potter was excited to see the site reach such a milestone.

"We're so thrilled to celebrate 150 years of Queensland Museum in 2012 and we're looking forward to kicking off the next 150 years," he asserted.

The reopening comes as part of South Bank's $40 million Cultural Centre development, which attracts almost 4 million visitors annually.
