Hutchinson Builders is among a consortium of companies announced for a $230 million housing project for Brisbane's south west.

The post-war public residential precinct at Coopers Plains will begin its transformation into a modern neighbourhood – including affordable housing, parks and a seniors complex – in the coming weeks.

In an announcement by state housing minister Karen Struthers yesterday (February 2), Hutchies will be co-leading seven other companies on the 10 hectare project.

"This project is the way of the future – medium density living, a mix of modern social housing and privately-owned townhouses and apartments, all guided by a master plan," she said.

"It means new homes just 12 kilometres from Brisbane's CBD, with train stations and buses in walking distance connecting to Sunnybank, Garden City, Griffith University and the QEII hospital."

Ms Struthers also explained that Hutchies will be offering work for locals in street beautification and community projects, as well as construction apprenticeships and traineeships.

The first stage of the housing development will feature a universal design, adaptable to those with mobility issues.
