The upgrade of sports facilities at Barkly College’s Tennant Creek High Campus in the Northern Territory is now complete, as the multipurpose gym officially opened yesterday (May 24).
Education minister Chris Burns and local member Gerry McCarthy were on hand for the ceremony, with the site now available to students, staff and the wider Tennant Creek community.
The $3.2 million project was part of an election promise made by the territory government in 2008 and was completed in February.
"This is a great facility for Tennant families as it will be open to the whole community and will cater to a number of sports including basketball, netball, indoor soccer and badminton – just to name a few," Mr McCarthy said.
"Our social, economic and community wellbeing relies on achieving gains in education and we know sport and physical activity is a great way for young people to gain confidence and stay engaged," Mr Burns added.
Construction of the facility included installing air conditioning, a high ceiling fan and soft flooring, as well as marking lines for competitive sporting games – making it adaptable for a broad range of activities.
