For as long as he can remember, Queensland MBA Apprentice of the Year Matthew Williams has wanted to work in construction. He used to watch his Grandad build houses, and seeing the process of a home evolving from the ground up captured his imagination from a very early age.

Throughout his schooling, Matt couldn’t shake his fascination with building, and he found himself doing work experience with Hutchinson Builders during high school. He loved it. And quickly signed on for an apprenticeship at the first opportunity. “The idea of working on large scale projects was pretty exciting, and Hutchies had a great reputation as an employer, so the decision was an easy one”, he says.

Matt feels like he got a lot more from Hutchies than the carpentry apprenticeship he signed on for. “Hutchies’ in-house training gives you plenty of flexibility and the opportunity to complete the theory work, while on a live project, which helps put your knowledge in to practice in a real construction situation. They’re unique in that they provide their apprentices the opportunity to become a commercial builder, as well as a carpenter”, he said. “Working with Hutchies has provided me with the chance to work over multiple sectors and see what makes a successful project, whether it be a small housing refurb or a large scale mining project.”

Hutchies has long been a champion of fresh ideas, initiative and innovation. It offers a breadth of opportunity to the young entrepreneurial spirit – which holds buckets of appeal for Matt. “I can definitely see myself with Hutchies for a long time to come. They always embrace anyone willing to put their hand up and have a go. I’d like to continue to develop my new office-based role and hopefully be the man in charge of a Hutchies signature project in the years to come.”

And the best part about working with Hutchies? “It’s the complete lack of routine!”, says Matt. “Each day is different from the last and brings a new set of challenges which help you develop as a builder every day.”

Keep your eye out for what this young gun does in the future. We have a feeling there are great things to come.
