It’s one thing to hear about a career in construction. It’s another to pick up the tools and give it a go.

That’s exactly what 20 students from Lourdes Hill College and Park Ridge State High School did at our recent Try’a Trade event.

Run by Hutchies Training and funded by Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), Try’a Trade gives students in Years 10 to 12 a hands-on introduction to construction.

The students rolled up their sleeves and rotated through three trade activities – carpentry, tiling and painting.

Hutchies’ tradespeople were there to show them the ropes.

They shared practical skills, demonstrated techniques and helped the students make something of their own.

But there’s much more to construction than what happens on the tools.

The hands-on learning continued over lunch in the project site room, where the students heard from Delaney McGill-Timarac, First Year Carpentry Apprentice at Hutchies.

Delaney shared how she got into her apprenticeship, what she gets to do on a Hutchies project and what she’s learnt along the way. It gave the students the chance to hear first-hand what starting a career in construction can look like.

The students were then taken on a tour of one of our active job sites by the Project Manager.

Along the way, they learnt more about how a project comes together and the different roles involved in bringing it to life.

Try’a Trade gives students the chance to step onto a construction project, ask questions and experience different career paths for themselves.

Most importantly, they get to have a go.

It was great to see all 20 students jump in, learn something new and get a taste of where a career in construction could take them.
