DesignManagers'Conference2026
News

Christopher ‘Lano’ Lanigan has been named Hutchies' 2026 Design Manager of the Year (DMOTY).
Lano has been part of Hutchies since 2005 and was one of the original design managers in the business. Over that time, he has worked across multiple teams and built strong relationships across the company.
He is known for quietly solving problems, even when they are not his to carry. He takes ownership, works through issues and keeps projects moving without noise. Lano always puts Hutchies first. He focuses on what is right for the business, not just his project or team.
Lano’s experience spans many sectors and disciplines, including modular and insitu, from health to residential, community and commercial. Some key projects he has been involved in include the Logan Hospital Modular Ward, the Redland Hospital Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Program, Miles Residences at Kirra Beach, and Mobo in South Brisbane.

He is someone people rely on. He makes time to help others, even when he is under pressure himself. He does this without needing recognition or explanation.
He brings patience, consistency and care to his role. His approach reflects the culture we value at Hutchies – practical, supportive and focused on getting the job done.
This award recognises the role design managers play in bringing projects together from concept through to delivery.
It also reflects the growing importance of the discipline as projects become more complex and technically demanding.
Conference wrap up
DMC 2026 brought our people together from all over Australia to share ideas, lessons and practical experience.
It kicked off with an afternoon of outdoor team activities, axe throwing, laser clay shooting, archery and more before an evening get together of drinks and dinner.
This year’s theme centred on collaboration, digital tools, market challenges and opportunities that highlight the critical role design management plays in construction.
Special thanks to our guest speaker, Dr Dominik Holzer, who shared insights on how AI and digital tools are shaping construction.

#Key takeaways
Demand is strong, but supply is tight
Population growth continues to drive demand. Labour, materials and feasibility pressures are the main constraints.
Buildability advice matters earlier
Practical construction input during design reduces rework, improves coordination and supports better project outcomes.
Design is now the key lever
Design decisions drive cost, risk and program. Design managers play a bigger role earlier in projects.
ECI and D&C models are increasing
Clients want cost certainty earlier. This brings design and construction teams closer together from the start.
Carbon and compliance are core drivers
Sustainability and regulation now sit alongside cost and program in design decisions.
Skills and technology are changing teams
Shortages across consultants and the rise of AI are reshaping how teams work.
Clear decisions reduce risk
Good documentation and structured decisions support projects under pressure.
Feasibility starts earlier
Projects are shaped at concept stage. Early planning and option testing are critical.

The conference reinforced a clear message
Design Managers are central to project success. They shape projects early, manage risk and drive better outcomes for clients.
Congratulations again to Christopher for your recognition, and thank you to all company members who contributed to a strong and valuable conference.
