Hutchies partnered with the Sunshine Coast Council to transform the existing three-storey Caloundra Council Chamber – originally built in 1996 – into a vibrant new community hub. The refurbishment repurposed the building to house the modern Caloundra public library on the ground and first floors, with council offices occupying the second level.

The original structure had experienced significant deflection in its concrete slabs, with movement up to approximately 80mm. Despite these challenges, the project successfully delivered a future-ready facility that meets high sustainability standards, achieving a 6 Star Green Star rating.
The new library is now a cornerstone of the Sunshine Coast’s cultural and civic life. It provides free access to resources, programs, and services that promote lifelong learning, digital inclusion, and social connection. From storytime sessions to tech workshops, it’s a welcoming space for all ages and backgrounds.

By repurposing an existing building, the project reflects Council’s commitment to sustainability and smart urban renewal. This transformation supports the vision for a connected, accessible, and resilient community facility.
With both Hutchies and the client team based full-time onsite, open and honest communication was maintained throughout the build. This collaborative approach enabled quick issue resolution and kept all stakeholders engaged and informed.

From start to finish, the level of communication, teamwork, and mutual respect shown by everyone has been exceptional. It’s been one of those rare projects where the builder–architect relationship felt genuinely supportive and solution-focused, and that made all the difference."
