The Blacktown Mental Health Recovery Centre is a purpose-built facility designed to deliver contemporary models of forensic mental health care. Developed under the Statewide Mental Health Infrastructure Program (SWMHIP), the centre replaces the existing Bunya Unit at Cumberland Hospital and relocates it to the Blacktown Hospital campus.
The new three-storey, 44-bed centre includes 24 medium secure forensic beds and 20 low secure beds, expanding capacity to meet regional demand. The facility is designed to support recovery-focused care, encouraging independence and participation in therapeutic activities. It integrates seamlessly with general health services at Blacktown Hospital and features wellness architecture and landscape design that promote healing and connection to nature.
The centre’s façade, inspired by native red gum and lilli pilli trees, and its civic entry plaza with oversized angular window boxes, reflect a commitment to transparency, vibrancy, and community engagement.
