Hutchies’ Townsville Northshore Retail Precinct has won the Commercial / Industrial Building $25 million to $50 million category at the 2026 Master Builders Association North Queensland Housing & Construction Awards.

The award recognises the team led by Michael White, who delivered the 19,411m² retail precinct at 30-38 North Shore Blvd, Burdell, for client OneFin.

The team selected materials to suit North Queensland’s climate. The Large Format Retail building uses tilt-up concrete panels. The KFC and childcare buildings feature weatherboard and fibre cement cladding. Krispy Kreme incorporates an external tiled façade. Landscaping softens the built form and connects the precinct to the surrounding suburb.

The development combines four separate buildings on a single site. Each had different tenancy requirements, handover dates and trade sequencing. Tenants vary, and include Snap Fitness, KFC, Krispy Kreme, Green Leaves Early Learning, ALDI, MyCar, The Reject Shop, Subway and Pet Stock.

One standout feature is the use of the Atlantis Flo-Cell system on the Large Format Retail building. The product is typically used as a landscaping drainage cell, but the team adapted it as a façade element.

The project team also managed a significant late design change. Snap Fitness required a suspended mezzanine level and vertical transport within the Large Format Retail building. The change demanded close coordination between the architectural, structural, services and tilt panel teams while construction was already underway. The team delivered the change without affecting the program or finish quality.

Master Builders judges inspect every project entry as part of the judging process. The award reflects both the quality of the finished precinct and the effort that went into delivering it.

Congratulations to Michael White and the entire project team.
