A historic Brisbane building reimagined as a contemporary Junior School for the next generation of Brisbane Girls Grammar School students.
The new Junior School at Brisbane Girls Grammar School transforms the former Queensland Country Women’s Association building at Gregory Terrace into a contemporary learning environment for Years 5 and 6 students.
The project involved the refurbishment and extension of the existing structure into a five‑storey building with a basement. An adaptive reuse approach retained and strengthened the original building, preserving its presence within the Gregory Terrace streetscape while extending its life and purpose.
The completed Junior School includes eight general learning areas, a dedicated art and science wet space, a central library, and performing arts rehearsal rooms. Company members integrated staff facilities and administration spaces throughout the building to support daily school operations.

Following completion, Principal Ms Jacinda Euler Welsh sent a letter of thanks to Hutchies’ Chairman Scott Hutchinson, acknowledging the project team’s contribution and commitment throughout delivery.
She wrote:
MsJacindaEulerWelsh,Principal,BrisbaneGirlsGrammarSchool"On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the community of Brisbane Girls Grammar School, I extend our deepest gratitude to Hutchinson Builders for the exceptional professionalism and dedication demonstrated throughout the delivery of our new Junior School. Your team's commitment went far beyond expectations and has left a lasting impression on all of us."
The letter also recognised the efforts of individual company members on the project team, with specific praise for the Team Leader and Project Manager for their leadership, care and responsiveness throughout the project.

To mark the project’s completion, Hutchies commissioned a bespoke artwork by Julia Sirianni, a Brisbane Girls Grammar School alumnae, as a gift to the Junior School.
The artwork was intentionally commissioned from an artist with a genuine connection to the school community and now forms part of the Junior School environment, contributing to a sense of continuity, care, and belonging from day one.

At ground level, a staff lunchroom opens directly onto an outdoor terrace and landscaped play area. Large bi‑fold doors and stepped seating create a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, supporting informal gathering and everyday school life.

Delivered within an operational school environment and a constrained inner‑city site, the project required careful planning and close coordination. The result is a high‑quality Junior School that supports learning, creativity, and connection for generations of BGGS students.
