Last Friday Hutchies welcomed The Hon Mick de Brenni, Minister for Housing and Public Works to our Midtown Centre project in the Brisbane CBD for the official launch of our newest flagship pop-up construction training school together with @hutchiestraining, our @statimyaga and new Construction Sustainability & Technology initiatives. The $175 million dollar refurbishment and upgrade project is anticipated to run until 2021, create 450 direct local jobs which will include training approximately 150 students with a target of 50% Indigenous participation. Hutchies is passionate about training initiatives such as these as we believe shaping the next generation of workers is the key to future proofing the construction industry.

“I started out as a school based apprentice with GCSC and then went full-time once I finished school. I spent most of my apprenticeship working under Mitch Bohringer where I developed and adapted to his way of looking at things. He has played an integral role in helping me get to where I am today. Standing back at the end of any job and looking at what you’ve accomplished is easily the best part. You get to meet a good bunch of guys within your subcontractor crew along the way, and some of those guys you get to take onto your next job. It makes life on site much easier when you get along with the group of guys you work with. If you’ve got poor relationships it’s really hard to be there day in day out getting the work done. It’s important to always keep a positive outlook. Sometimes, you know, things at work go bad but you’ve just got to keep a positive attitude and look for solutions rather than just getting caught up in the problem.” #humansofhutchies Adam Stiff, Site Manager

On Friday 1 November our Wollongong team held a @trademutt BBQ at our Parq on Flinders site raising funds for @tiacsfoundation in partnership with Trademutt. TIACS goal is to tackle men’s suicide in Australia head on in an effort to effect change and lower the rate of men’s suicide in Australia. Everyone from Hutchies employees to site tradies donned their Trademutt gear to raise awareness. Our subbies even got involved donating their time and money to the cause. After everyone enjoyed a @bunnings donated BBQ, local charity @talk2mebro_au spoke about men’s mental health and creating societal change by reducing the stigma around suicide and getting men to feel ok about talking about what they are going through. We were so impressed by everyone’s input and raised over $2K for TIACS! #hutchies #hutchies1912 #hutchinsonbuilders #startaconversation #thisisaconversationstarter #trademutt #talk2mebro #hutchiesfeelgood #suicideprevention #suicideawareness #tiacs #suicide #menshealth #construction #constructionindustry #ruok

“The project that I’m currently working on is 263 two-storey terrace homes that sit on top of a podium. Sixteen acres in area. It’s a very good project to be involved in. Whilst I pride myself as being a builder, it’s important to have a good communication skill-set, so that you make sure you get the best out of everybody, in order to achieve a common goal. And that is: hand the project over, on time, on budget, whilst keeping everybody safe.”

“I grew up in a country Victorian town called Axedale, about 20km out of Bendigo. After high school I moved to Geelong to study Architecture, I loved design however later realised I wasn’t going to become an Architect. I changed to a double degree in Architecture and Construction Management. After finishing my degree I moved to Brisbane in late 2015, starting with Hutchies in early 2016 as a Design Coordinator. Most days I walk into meetings being the only female, which can be intimidating but I don’t let it phase me as I have a job to do, it’s also a great help having a very supportive team around me. Working in the construction industry is so rewarding and hands on, and I encourage anyone that is considering it to jump in and give it a go.” #humansofhutchies Morgan Marshall, Design Manager

“To be honest the doctors said he was never going to make it. They sort of advised us that we should turn off his life support and that was it. We hung in there. We fought through. He fought through. He's the one that fought it. And, like I couldn't imagine, we could have lost him then and there. So I think we're the fortunate family. There were so many other unprovoked attacks around Australia where people have lost their lives. He's 28 now and it's been 10 years of it, but yeah - it was just...taken away.”

Our Hutchies’ team on the Crown Plaza Hobart project recently hosted a BBQ fundraiser on site for RU OK? Day. The fantastic people from Indian Motorcycle Tasmania even came to site and put on a show for all the workers! Not only did we have a great turnout and an awesome time but the donations kept on coming long after the event had finished. Together we managed to raise $10K for Sailability Tasmania, a voluntary non-profit organisation that encourages people with disabilities to participate in sailing in a safe and friendly environment. “My role as a National ‘Future Leaders’ Coordinator revolves around connecting with people and really finding out where they are at in their world and how I can help propel them into their future. That’s the way I see my role and I love the opportunity to be able to empower people to realise their dreams. There’s definitely a moment in training when the penny drops and they get it, and to be able to facilitate a program that makes people realise some dreams they may have had but then also create new dreams and new opportunities to go further than they thought they could go makes me come alive. That’s the beauty of Hutchies, we can smash the glass ceiling because there really is no limit to what our people can do and for me to play a small part in that and to activate that process within them or just help them up to another level is phenomenal.” #humansofhutchies Warren Belford, National ‘Future Leaders’ Coordinator

“After serving the building industry for 32 years, I wanted a change of career, and I decided, I’ll become a minister. In 2013 when I left, Paul came up to me and said, 'You know what? If you leave here, we might even find that a presence of something that you carry leaving us, so why don’t you come back [later] and be our pastoral carer?’. I call myself ‘the workplace chaplain’.”

One of the tallest cranes currently on the Gold Coast arrived on site over the weekend to kickstart construction of the first Dorsett hotel in Australia. We've partnered up with the Destination Gold Coast Consortium to build a 53-storey tower containing the 4.5 star luxury hotel as well as residential apartments. The 50-metre high crane will be used to construct the hotel's six level podium that will connect with the existing Star Grand. #hutchies #hutchiesbuilt #hutchiescrane #hutchinsonbuilders #destinationgoldcoast #destinationgoldcoastconsortium #thestargoldcoast #thestargc #dorsetthotels #fareastconsortium #chowtaifookenterprises #goldcoast #broadbeach #goldcoastconstruction #hospitalityandtourism #residential #australia #building #architecture #construction #crane

“It’s important to continue raising awareness around women in construction. As a fourth year apprentice I believe I am instilling in other women the idea that you can be a woman and work in construction. As I progress further in my career I aim to use my voice to empower women to reach their full potential. As a future goal I have set my sights on becoming one of the first female construction Team Leaders within Hutchies, however I know that this is a process not to be rushed. As for my goals within the industry, I would love to help eradicate the common misconception that being a tradesperson is a last resort for people without degrees. People working on site in a trade are as important as people working in the office. Site and office roles complement each other and without one a project could not operate.” #humansofhutchies Erin Richardson, Apprentice Carpenter

“My background is in banking where there are lots of rules, processes and hierarchy but that’s not the case here at Hutchies. Everyone is treated equally and there’s a lot of trust placed in people which is great. We have the freedom to make decisions and make calls and have things happen here. Working in the contract review team, it’s our job to make sure all contracts Hutchies enters into reflects what it is they think they’ve signed up to build. I think the biggest misconception about the contract review role is that we’re trying to hold up contracts. When it’s actually here to help get the contract across the line, but that means making sure the contract is right. Throughout my career I have learnt that you have to own the decisions you make and to also be aware of the consequences and outcomes they can have. Aside from work I love spending time with my family and I’m also a bit of a foodie. I love cooking Middle Eastern style dishes and a couple of my favourite spots to eat out at are Gerard’s Bistro on James Street and Happy Boy in Fortitude Valley.” #humansofhutchies Desmier Nairn, Construction Finance Manager
