“To be honest the doctors said he was never going to make it. They sort of advised us that we should turn off his life support and that was it. We hung in there. We fought through. He fought through. He's the one that fought it. And, like I couldn't imagine, we could have lost him then and there. So I think we're the fortunate family. There were so many other unprovoked attacks around Australia where people have lost their lives. He's 28 now and it's been 10 years of it, but yeah - it was just...taken away.”

Our Hutchies’ team on the Crown Plaza Hobart project recently hosted a BBQ fundraiser on site for RU OK? Day. The fantastic people from Indian Motorcycle Tasmania even came to site and put on a show for all the workers! Not only did we have a great turnout and an awesome time but the donations kept on coming long after the event had finished. Together we managed to raise $10K for Sailability Tasmania, a voluntary non-profit organisation that encourages people with disabilities to participate in sailing in a safe and friendly environment. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone that made this day a success! #hutchies #hutchiesbuilt #hutchinsonbuilders #ruok #ruokday #ruokeveryday #sailability #sailabilitytasmania #indianmotorcycle #indianmotorcycletasmania #tasmania #tasmaniaconstruction #hobart #australia #building #architecture #construction

“My role as a National ‘Future Leaders’ Coordinator revolves around connecting with people and really finding out where they are at in their world and how I can help propel them into their future. That’s the way I see my role and I love the opportunity to be able to empower people to realise their dreams. There’s definitely a moment in training when the penny drops and they get it, and to be able to facilitate a program that makes people realise some dreams they may have had but then also create new dreams and new opportunities to go further than they thought they could go makes me come alive. That’s the beauty of Hutchies, we can smash the glass ceiling because there really is no limit to what our people can do and for me to play a small part in that and to activate that process within them or just help them up to another level is phenomenal.” #humansofhutchies Warren Belford, National ‘Future Leaders’ Coordinator

“After serving the building industry for 32 years, I wanted a change of career, and I decided, I’ll become a minister. In 2013 when I left, Paul came up to me and said, 'You know what? If you leave here, we might even find that a presence of something that you carry leaving us, so why don’t you come back [later] and be our pastoral carer?’. I call myself ‘the workplace chaplain’.”

One of the tallest cranes currently on the Gold Coast arrived on site over the weekend to kickstart construction of the first Dorsett hotel in Australia. We've partnered up with the Destination Gold Coast Consortium to build a 53-storey tower containing the 4.5 star luxury hotel as well as residential apartments. The 50-metre high crane will be used to construct the hotel's six level podium that will connect with the existing Star Grand. #hutchies #hutchiesbuilt #hutchiescrane #hutchinsonbuilders #destinationgoldcoast #destinationgoldcoastconsortium #thestargoldcoast #thestargc #dorsetthotels #fareastconsortium #chowtaifookenterprises #goldcoast #broadbeach #goldcoastconstruction #hospitalityandtourism #residential #australia #building #architecture #construction #crane

“It’s important to continue raising awareness around women in construction. As a fourth year apprentice I believe I am instilling in other women the idea that you can be a woman and work in construction. As I progress further in my career I aim to use my voice to empower women to reach their full potential. As a future goal I have set my sights on becoming one of the first female construction Team Leaders within Hutchies, however I know that this is a process not to be rushed. As for my goals within the industry, I would love to help eradicate the common misconception that being a tradesperson is a last resort for people without degrees. People working on site in a trade are as important as people working in the office. Site and office roles complement each other and without one a project could not operate.” #humansofhutchies Erin Richardson, Apprentice Carpenter

“My background is in banking where there are lots of rules, processes and hierarchy but that’s not the case here at Hutchies. Everyone is treated equally and there’s a lot of trust placed in people which is great. We have the freedom to make decisions and make calls and have things happen here. Working in the contract review team, it’s our job to make sure all contracts Hutchies enters into reflects what it is they think they’ve signed up to build. I think the biggest misconception about the contract review role is that we’re trying to hold up contracts. When it’s actually here to help get the contract across the line, but that means making sure the contract is right. Throughout my career I have learnt that you have to own the decisions you make and to also be aware of the consequences and outcomes they can have. Aside from work I love spending time with my family and I’m also a bit of a foodie. I love cooking Middle Eastern style dishes and a couple of my favourite spots to eat out at are Gerard’s Bistro on James Street and Happy Boy in Fortitude Valley.” #humansofhutchies Desmier Nairn, Construction Finance Manager

Last night Hutchies and Consolidated Properties celebrated the end of the financial year at the newly opened Fortitude Music Hall. We also chose this occasion to not only commemorate Consolidated Properties’ 40th anniversary, but to officially launch Hutchies 100 Year book ‘More Than The Truth: Hutchies’ Hundred Years’. We were privileged to have The Right Honourable, The Lord Mayor of Brisbane, Councillor Adrian Schrinner as our special guest of honour and speaker. Sixteen years ago, Brisbane music lovers mourned the loss of Festival Hall. On Friday night, that hole in the heart of the city's music scene will finally be filled, with the Fortitude Music Hall set to open its doors to the public for the first time. For the duo behind the venue, Queensland builder Scott Hutchinson and ex-Powderfinger bassist John "JC" Collins, Friday could not come soon enough.

When Festival Hall was sold in 2003 to make way for an apartment block, the Queensland capital lost a much-loved music venue that had hosted the likes of the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac and Nirvana.

We recently partnered with @trademutt to create our very own 'Hutchies Feel Good' shirts. These shirts represent Trademutt's mission in the industry, which is to tackle suicide head on by opening up conversations between tradies on site. Hutchies is fully behind this idea which is why we asked Trademutt to design our own version in Hutchies' colours. "All of my life in all of the jobs I’ve worked in, I’ve always tried to address mine and other people’s safety around me. I try to see things that could be occurring or might occur and prevent them by putting strategies in place before an incident happens. I believe whatever you walk past and don’t do anything about, you’re saying it’s okay. It doesn’t matter what it is, if you walk past it and don’t address it in any way, then you’re accepting whatever it is. Simple as that. When I’m not working, I’m usually out diving. I’ve always had a love for diving and it started at age 13. Along the way I’ve worked as a commercial diver, dive instructor and started my own dive business in Breakfast Creek, Byron Bay and Merimbula. One of my favorite spots is Beqa Reef Lagoon in Fuji where I swam with 20 to 50 bull sharks. I have learnt many valuable lessons from diving like planning and confidence in tasks that you take on. It’s important to plan what you’re going to do and be confident that when you commit to doing it, you can actually follow it through. You can equate that into the building side of things as well. You need a good CA, Site Manager, etc. You need a team to be able to put the task together. It’s fine for the builder to say “I built that project” but the reality is he didn’t build it on his own. He coordinated the building with the relevant people team-wise. To me that’s the biggest lesson diving taught me, you need to be confident in your own skills and ability but work as part of a team and to plan what you’re going to do." #humansofhutchies Maurie Vierow, Health & Safety Team Manager
