“At the start of 2012 I crossed the fence from structural engineering and began work on a mining project in Central Queensland. It was one of the hardest projects I’ve had to do in my life – it was FIFO work, it was big hours, I was living with my colleagues, and it was very demanding work. It was the first time that my eyes were opened to the many pieces of the puzzle that is construction – not just structural engineering, which is only one aspect. Throughout the project I witnessed tremendous team work from a small group of people who had to overcome so much to be able to deliver the project. This project that was my first experience on the construction side of the fence, and it was on this project that I realised that my passion was not structural engineering; my passion was construction. I learnt that Hutchies is a place where you do whatever it takes to get a job done, and have some fun along the way - and when it’s done, you can celebrate with your team and look back at what you have achieved. I had become well and truly “Hutchified”...” #humansofhutchies Kurt Nolan, Design Manager

“On my first day with Hutchies in January I flew to Melbourne for inductions and to meet the team but managed to spend the morning walking around the office greeting people with my fly undone (true story)! My interest in construction started as a kid… I had a habit of pulling things apart just so I could put them back together. My Dad was always complaining about having a shed full of broken and pulled apart pieces. Upon graduating Year 12 in 2004 I commenced my career in the construction industry as a plumber where I completed an apprenticeship and worked for eight years. During this time, I learnt three things. 1. Smoko’s at 10am 2. S**t goes downhill 3. Pay day is Thursday. As I learnt more about the “nuts and bolts” of construction, my interest for the industry grew. In 2013 I enrolled at The University of South Australia where I completed an Honours Degree in Construction Management & Economics and have since progressed into project management.” #humansofhutchies Scott Townsend, Project Manager

“In my first year at Uni I got a cadetship with Concrete Constructions on the Ramada Renaissance Hotel project in Pitt Street, Sydney. It was 1986, and for 3 months straight, all I did was plan printing with an old ammonia printer with hand-written transmittals and drawings in a hanging box. I reported to the Document Controller, who basically kept me locked up in the print room getting high on ammonia … Good times!! (Cadets have it easy today). It taught me that everyone had to start somewhere and that with an education and experience I wouldn’t be the print boy for long!” #humansofhutchies Sean Nyssen, Team Leader

“My parents grew up in a low socio-economic area of Durban, South Africa. My Dad had always known he was destined for greatness, although coming from a family of 7 who shared the living space no bigger than a double garage, he climbed his fair share of mountains to get there. My mother was from a family of 11, who lived on a farm and lived off the land. They got married in the in the 70s where apartheid was still rife all throughout Southern Africa. If you’ve ever seen the movie ‘The Power of One’, you will understand the complexities of the situation they faced..." #humansofhutchies Alistair Pillay, Contract Administrator (photography by @willsteelephotography)

“I’ve personally been in the construction industry for thirteen years but construction has always been in my life with both my parents being engineers and every house we lived in since I was born has had some form of renovation undertaken. We moved to Rockhampton from Sydney when I was fifteen as my Mum had accepted the position of Dean of Engineering at CQU University. I finished high school in 2004 in Rockhampton and started my own construction career as an apprentice carpenter at the end of 2005 after completing my first semester of university and decided university wasn’t for me. Fast forward to my time with Hutchies where I have become a bit of an all-rounder being involved with multiple roles over the past five years including estimating, contracts administration / project management and even being a temporary site foreman...” #humansofhutchies Pat Taylor, Estimating Manager
